This is the ninety-eighth submission for my attempt at looneytunerian's Pokeshipping Theme Challenge.
81. Under the Sea
"I found you."
"I found you."
Mmm buddy, another theme I was lost on till last minute. Like, how could I go about this? What would be the posing for it? The potential story? Should I make it close to or in actual relation of another Misty Mermaid piece I've done in the past? What about the medium? So many questions and I left them all hanging until I finally sat down to start drawing the darn thing. Of course, I was initially not really into the sketch I came up with. It was a little messier and some of the proportions were off. I started to go traditional, to the best that I recall, before going with digital... and then I had the great idea of trying harder with color palettes than my lazy ass usually does. To be honest, though, this piece and its coloring wasn't hard. It was actually quite fun to do. (The next theme, however, was so tedious and didn't even come out as dynamic as I wanted but we'll save that discussion for that theme!)
Um, oh yeah, so there's a bit of an homage here to another Pokemon manga that came out back in the day that I really enjoyed. It was titled Magical Pokémon Journey here in the States but it was originally called Pocket Monsters PiPiPi * Adventures back in Japan. It was a very laidback, shojo style manga about a girl named Hazel (Maron in Japanese) with her human and pokemon friends having different light-hearted adventures. And when I say 'light-hearted' I mean, it's a series that your 5-year-old cousin can read with no worries for inappropriate content. It's cornier to me now as an adult but I still like it well enough to where I wouldn't give up my physical copies for anything. So, if you can find it, check it out. (I especially like the bonus comics about the author herself talking about playing the games and such. Pretty fun.)
So, going back to the previously stated homage, it's way more subtle than I would've liked. I mostly tried to copy the art style of the manga but it's probably impossible to spot unless you look really hard at images of the manga covers next to my artwork here. ^_^;; So, I'll just tell you. I tried with the eyes, hair, and ear design for Misty (which was lifted from Yumi Tsukirino's design of a mermaid in the manga itself). I also tried to keep the lineart as thin as I was comfortable with since the manga doesn't have thick lines (unless for visual gag purposes). Again, it's probably so subtle that no one noticed till I pointed it out. Which is a bit of a disappointment for me since I wanted to go heavier with it... but I also didn't feel confident in reformatting through the sketch-to-lineart process to do so. So, what can you do? ^_^;;
Aside from that, I feel pretty proud of the color palette. Like, I feel as if Ash and Misty really are under water, y'know? So, yay for small victories~! ^_^ Anyway, onto the next theme!
